Another Fantastic Read from ShowalterMay 1, 2008 6 out of 10 found this review helpful
Gena Showalter has once again produced a completely engrossing book that sucks the readers in and doesn't let them out again until the last page is turned. Even then the first thing one wants to do is dive back in and read more.
She has an incredible talent for creating a paranormal world that makes perfect sense despite the fantastical nature of her characters. However incredible the creatures, or in this case, demon-possessed immortal guards, every detail has logic and purpose.
If I had any complaints about the book it would be the number of characters involved. They all have their place, and no one is a fifth wheel to the story, however there are so many I did have to pause a few times to keep track of the "who's who" in the story. That said, once I had mental nametags on everyone the story flowed beautifully.
While I'm usually not a fan of the "fall in love quick" stories, the intensity of the story allows for intense emotions. The paranormal influence also excuses some of the haste. Even though the characters have a short time together, the emotions run high and strong.
Fabulous and well worth the cover price. I can hardly wait for 'The Darkest Kiss' to hit the shelves.
LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!April 30, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful

Awesome Book!April 29, 2008 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
I read a lot of paranormal romance books and it's been a while since I've felt compelled to write a review. Well, this book was WOW! I just couldn't wait to write a little praise for it. I was hooked from the first chapter. It's a page turner, can't put down kind of book. I finish the book in one day. These demon lords are dangerous and sexy, all rolled into one. The main hero and heroin (Maddox and Ashlyn) are great characters. Gena Showalter did a fabulous job for the start of what seems to be an exciting series. Her 2nd book is on Lucien but I'm really edging to read her 3rd book about Reyes and Danika. I highly recommend this book.
Showalter has started out with a bang.April 29, 2008 22 out of 28 found this review helpful
As a normal reader of all that is Gena Showalter, I was anticipating a good read - Boy I was wrong! This one absolutely blew me away. The story of Maddox and Ashlyn just struck a chord with me, it had me laughing, crying and pleading silently for a happy ever after.
The typical hero/heroine sacrifice has to be in my top five of all time. Okay enough with that my review follows:
1.) Believable falling in love time? (1= Unbelievable, 5= Believable)
3.5, only because it was very short time period (less than a week). I am a firm believer when you read paranormal fiction that the standard weeks and months need not apply for the falling part but the period should coincide with the emotional healthiness of the characters.
5, Gena did an excellent job of creating her world and not overwhelming you with the unnecessary descriptive paragraphs that some authors love. The history was peppered throughout with the remembering of the characters.
3) Was the HERO unbelievably SCORCHING? (1= Yuck, 5= Get the Fire Department)
5, Duh! I had my Ashlyn move over you are not worthy moment.
4) Happy Ever After (1= There was a romance? 5= A box of Kleenex ending (with an epilogue)
4.5, not a 5 because this is the first in the series and there was no epilogue. I love and need one of those.
5) Reading time (1=Train reading, 5=Stayed up all night)
5, boy was the next day at work hard!
I would recommed picking this one up.

As an avid reader of paranormal I felt compelled to write this review: witty, funny, exciting, different, think J.R.Ward meets Sherrilyn Kenyon and you'll have an idea of this book!!! I loved reading The Darkest Night and couldn't put it down. I can't wait for the next story The Darkest Pleasure, and I'm just delighted that it's due out next month, then another one in July. It's been a while since I've read something new that I like so much. I finally have a new series to look forward to :)
