4 out of 5 stars Girl Goat Wearing Google Goggles, Ten Tired Turtles on a Tuttle-Tutlle Tree, and a Whole Lot More.   November 16, 2008
Most well known for his delightful children's stories full of witty wordplay covering allegorical nuggets of social commentary and teachable moments, Dr. Suess (aka Theodor Geisel) also wrote this excellent abecedarian to use in helping younger children learn to read, spell, and write. The book introduces each minuscule (lowercase) and capital (upper case) letter in the English alphabet, e.g. "Big A, Little a" and "Big B, Little b" and so on and so forth. The letter introduction is followed by a rhyming phrase full of letters beginning with the letter just introduced, except for "X" which has a phrase with a list of words that end in the letter. Like all of Dr. Suess's books DR. SEUSS'S ABC is also illustrated with images portraying what was just said on the page before. True to the Doctor's usual style, there are a few tricky names in the book. Children having the book read to them will probably love that, but beginner readers may find a few of those names a little frustrating. Overall a great ABC book recommended not only for fans of Dr. Seuss, but for any children who are beginning to read. It also makes a very good bedtime book.

5 out of 5 stars Dr Seuss collection   September 15, 2008
Much more than a humorist or fanciful children's writer, Dr Seuss was ahead of his time...his social and political commentaries are much wider in scope than most people realize. He should be required reading through middle school--even beyond. His simple themes and observations ask the larger questions every society should continually ask and demand a commitment from the reader to chose a point of view.

4 out of 5 stars Not a great early reader, but a fun readaloud for those learning the alphabet   August 3, 2008
You know the format of abecedarians. Each letter is illustrated with a rhyme - it might be a sentence describing the scene (Silly Sammy Slick sipped six sodas and got sick sick sick) or a list of various items in the picture that start with the letter (Big N, little n, what begins with those? Nine new neckties, and a nightshirt, and a nose).

Very typically Seussian, really great read-aloud - neither too long nor too short.

Please note that I do not recommend the board book. They arbitrarily edited some of the rhymes (never for the better), and anyway, it's poorly constructed and likely to fall apart. Just get the real book. You'll thank me later.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing   March 10, 2008

While the illustrations are cute, Dr. Suess's ABC's did not hold my 4-year-old's attention. I was disappointed that the book didn't use simpler language, so beginning readers could try sounding out some words on their own.

5 out of 5 stars X is very useful if your name is Nixie Knox...   February 14, 2008

Dr. Seuss's ABC Beginner Book is perhaps the best way I know to introduce your child to the alphabet. There's a lot of fun for young children in this book; the illustrations are wonderful and the use of the letters in making new words for children is excellent. It truly reflects well on Dr. Seuss that he wrote such a fine book for young child just beginning to learn how to read.

This book introduces young children to the alphabet by first showing them the letters of the alphabet in both upper case and lower case forms; and then (usually on the next page) the child sees a thing or a creature with a name that starts with the letter being introduced. This book also asks questions to make children think. For example, the book at one point asks "What begins with (the letter) B?" The answers in the book use as many words beginning with that letter as possible; and I think that's very good.

The book also encourages young children to go ahead and learn more with a sprinkling of pats on the back like "Hooray! Hooray!" This is a very good strategy.

The hardcover of the book is strong enough to resist any accidental damage your young child may want to do to it; and the quality of the paper is excellent.

Overall, Dr. Seuss's ABC is a fine book that remains one of the best ways for children to learn the alphabet even all these years later after it was first written and published. I highly recommend this book for children just beginning to learn the alphabet.
