Big disappointmentNovember 8, 2008 I have loved all previous Amy Tan books. I was hoping all the negative reviews were not true. This book, however is terrible. It's very long and it was hard to get through. Don't waste your time.
I just can't put it downSeptember 15, 2008 From the 1st page, I have not been able to put this book down. The characters are well defined and I found myself wanting to know more about them. As they got to Burma, I loved the details Ms. Tan gave about the travelers experiences and thoughts about their surroundings.
The underlying political message about Myanmar is a gentle reminder that there are still places in this world where people are not free and treatly poorly by those in control.
A Wonderful Adventure!September 6, 2008 I picked this book up on a hunch in an airport book store, and I'm so happy I did. If I had read these reviews I would have missed this funny and sly adventure tale. I am in awe of Amy Tan's skill.
Brilliant! Amy Tan does it again!August 21, 2008 Loved this book by Amy Tan. Tan crafts an amazing tale that had me laughing and on the edge of my seat. I enjoy the way she weaves the Chinese and Burmese superstitions into the lives of modern day travelers. I highly recommend this book.
Lighten up, naysayers!August 11, 2008 Don't believe the negative reviews- this was a fun, dark, thought provoking and humorous look at 12 American travelers and the trouble they find themselves when forced out of their comfort zone and preconceived notions. The story explores the shift in attitude, priorities and perceptions the characters experience when faced with the absurd & unimaginable predicament that befall them.
I understand the disappointment some readers have when their favorite authors leave their normal routine to explore something different. I'm so happy glad I didn't see these reviews before I picked up the book. Amy Tan writes beautifully and her story engaged me immediately. She stayed the course in exploring relationships not only between mother and daughter, but also other equally important relationships. The characters were each endearing in their own way. I loved the book and enjoyed the Q&A after as well.
