Beginners BewareJanuary 29, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I should have read more about this book before ordering. It's just what it says it is. I ended up giving it to a woman who is studying to become a yoga instructor. It's not something a beginner would really need to have in my opinion. It just tells you how to say and read the sanskrit words. It's not the book's fault that I didn't know what it was! :) It's probably excellent for those looking for this type of reference. It doesn't tell you HOW to do the postures, or anything like that.
Good succinct reference bookJanuary 22, 2008 Good reference material for sanskrit. The accompanying audio CDs with the pronunciations are a great learning aid to reinforce the written material.
interesting & intriguingNovember 5, 2007 I've often wondered what the sanckrit word mean or sound like. This looks like it will answer everything, yeah!

have you ever known what you want, but cant find it ? or had to use bits and pieces from here and there like a jigsaw puzzle ? or found something recognisably what you sought and 'made do' with that ?
for any student or teacher of yoga [or related subjects] seeking what this book claims to be, then, rejoice! you have found it . . this is it . .
agree with all reviewers. in every respect, from its solid, user-friendly binding and pages, double brass ring binders and ergonomic easy to handle size, to all contents, this book is self-evidently made to be used as an efficient effective enjoyable learning tool.
its creators have obviously considered everything, then gone about creating it . . if this is what youre looking for then look no further, you have found it . . .
finally, if you have a friend practicing or teaching yoga this would be a magic gift . . .

This book provides the Sanskrit terms for most of the yoga postures one is likely to run into in a class in the US. Pictures are clear and easy to identify and postures are listed in several ways that make them easy to find in the text. For example, all of the postures in the Ashtanga primary series are identified in one chapter. Chants are presented in Sanskrit, phonetically using the Latin alphabet and in English translation. A nice list of general terms is provided as well, which can be used to help translate the names of at least those postures with descriptive names.
