I took Sanskrit in college many moons ago and find that I still consult this book from time to time. It has both grammatical information, transliteration instruction, sanskrit-english and english-sanskrit dictionarys and wonderful reading selections from the Ramayana.

from what the authors call the "Whitney-Lanman- Perry" method of American Sanskrit instruction. Although not as close to traditional Indian teaching as Pierre Filliozat's "Grammaire Sanskrite Panineenne", this book makes for lively reading as it enables the student to enjoy passages from the Ramayana. The promised companion volume of readings is to be eagerly awaited.
