A fair readJune 17, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This book was ok. Not as funny as "Me Talk Pretty One Day" or "Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim". The first few stories were pretty slow, but the book picked up later on. The last essay, "The Smoking Room" was my favorite. It had the Dave humor I enjoyed in the previous books. I also liked "Solution to Saturday's Puzzle."
Totally worth it!June 17, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I heard this pitched as a book for those who love joy. While it's maybe not as outrageous or as focused as Me Talk Pretty and Dress your Family, there are absolutely laugh out loud moments throughout. It's worth the purchase if you're looking for an afternoon of voyeurism and the comfort that comes from knowing that you're not alone in your weird dark habits and quirks.
A cult bookJune 17, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I call this a "cult book" because you must be a fan of David Sedaris to appreciate the stories and the humor. I never read Sedaris before. I found his writing to be rambling at times and straining at humor at other times. I knew the book was destined for a box in my basement when I awoke this morning to the sounds of my dog chewing up the dust cover. I am glad, however, that so many others enjoyed this book. Hopefully their dust covers are intact.
This book, like his others, are just CRY GOOD!!June 17, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I am sorry, this man has me laughing til I cry each time he tells a story about his life. The writing style is bliss to read. I waited forever for this book to come out and it did not let me down! WONDERFUL WORK once again David. Thank You!!!
Also your heart growsJune 15, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This book--and this is no surprise I guess--is, in reliable Sedaris style, hilarious and super smart and beyond re-re-re-readable. But also I feel kind of morally improved--maybe this is silly!--by the way you feel forced to kind of open your heart to more and stranger people and situations when you read this.
