5 out of 5 stars An Accurate and Accessible Translation!   October 23, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

Finally, Derek has made this ancient Chinese text accessible to an English audience with his accurate translation and insightful commentary. The best thing is (unlike other popular versions), the translation is precise -- it's all there, mystifying sections and all. No paraphrasing or (yikes!) omissions here. Derek's vast knowledge of ancient Chinese characters, phrasing, stories and meanings help his commentaries bridge centuries and cultures, distilling the true essence of this timeless wisdom. A must if you are a serious student of Eastern Religions. This book has helped immensely to guide my path in life. I can't say enough good things about this particular translation.

One of the best books I've read! I find it very practical to our daily lives and as you read, it will guide you through many principles that has a connection to our life. Not only do you learn to understand the Tao of life but also learn more about yourself and those around you. I would definitely recommend reading this book!

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended   October 18, 2008

I have read several translations of the Tao Te Ching and this is by far the best. Mr. Lin's attention to accuracy in the translation captures the "letter" of the original text. And his superb commentary beautifully captures the "spirit" and makes it relevant for today. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Taoism.

5 out of 5 stars Bridging the Gap Between East and West   October 12, 2008

Derek Lin's fluency in both Chinese and English allows him to bridge the gap between Eastern and Western philosophies in this wonderful translation of the Tao Te Ching. As a newcomer to Taoism, I found the book to be profound and yet practical. The commentary on the facing pages of each chapter gives you a look into Derek's interpretation of the message contained within. It is a very eye-opening philosophy and representative of a truth I had been looking for for years. I urge anyone with even a remote interest in philosophy to purchase this book and apply its wisdom in their own life. Together with the online community that Derek has cultivated, this book will serve you as a guide for many years.

5 out of 5 stars A translation worthy of the title   October 6, 2008

After more than twenty years of studying Chinese philosophy in one form or another, finally we have a translation of the Classic Chinese Text of the Tao Te-Ching that renders a virtually seamless transition from Ancient Chinese to modern English.

The line-by-line transliteration from Chinese to English is virtually flawless, and the author seems to have gone far out of his way to keep the translation as a whole as utterly pure as possible and not allow personal bias or embellishments to seep into the work.

Bravo!
