Before we discuss content, which could be controversial depending on where you fall on the paranormal/spiritual level, we should start with the basic aspect of how the book is written. There are TONS of grammatical errors, bad spelling, chapters that are a page or less long, and dialog that reads like a bad first draft. You can read all 115 pages in well under an hour, and you'll come out of it feeling like this was slapped together in about a week or two of writing.
As for the ghost aspect: look, there's no scientific method anywhere to be found in this book, period. A pretty easy explanation to this is a lot of faulty wiring, and a bit more sad, a son who is just looking for his father's attention during what seems like a pretty sticky divorce situation. The thing is that once the ghost idea gets brought up, it is instantly accepted as the end-all, be-all answer to everything that's happening. There's not even a question or a doubt - it's just a feeling of certainty, and that's where he loses me. Greg is the kind of guy who meets one psychic and is totally blown away by her...and then meets another psychic and is totally blown away by her as well. Two amazing psychics on the first two tries? They must be handing these powers out at birth!
The saddest thing is toward the end, when he starts listing a bunch of coincidences, then asking if they are coincidences. For example, he had a premonition to use his hazard lights, and rightfully so - there was a problem with his radiator. It's one thing to suggest this is a coincidence, another to suggest it's a psychic premonition, and boy do you leap out of the park when ghosts are heavily implied to be the cause. Another sad scene occurs when he leaves out a doll for one of the ghosts to play with, then seems disappointed when it's in the exact same place on the stool for weeks on end (well, it does slip a bit - he wonders hopefully if this is due to the ghosts or just a slippery stool).
For those looking for scares, there are one or two incidents that might make you raise your eyebrows, but the book then nosedives into some pretty unbelievable territory for all but the most dedicated spiritualist. I got this book at the library for free, but had I paid any money for it, I'd be very, very annoyed.
WHAT HAPPENED?July 3, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I thought this would be a really good book from the looks of it and summary but I hate to say I was very disappointed. The author says there were alot of things going on, but he only goes into a very few things that happened to him and of those they could be attributed to bad wiring and just bad luck. I wish he had elaberated on more of what actually went on in the house rather then just saying things happened. What happened? Also I didn't believe a lot of what the medium told him and some of it was very repetitive dialog. I feel he was too easily lead by both the medium and channeler.
