Great reading whether you are a believer or not.October 25, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I am not convinced that ghosts exist, but I completely enjoyed the writing. This is a great book for anyone who enjoys reading about ghostly encounters even if you don't believe.
The very best book on the subjectSeptember 27, 2006 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have an interest in haunted houses, so I read as many "true" accounts as I can get my hands on. I constantly check amazon for recent publications on the subject. Most of what I read is trash; either it strikes me as completely made-up, or the poor writing detracts from the story, or both. **Elaine Mercado's book is the BEST I've read on the subject of hauntings. Elaine Mercado is a very intelligent, scientific (she is a a nurse), grounded person. At first took the hauntings with a grain of salt, as any of us would. But as the haunting intensified, she had to accept it for what it was, i.e., a supernatural occurence. **This book is beautifully written. The narrator is so grounded in reality that it makes these other-worldly occurences seem all the more creepy. I highly recommend this book. It is definitely the best of its genre. I have read it many times. I wish I could read it again for the first time.

I bought this book with the hope of learning more about hauntings. I'm so glad I chose this book as my first. It's a fantastic book that flows very well. I'd love to find more like this one! You should buy your copy today!

I think you have to appreciate what Elaine did with this book. She often told the reader that she wasn't a great writer and therefore all readers should take her non-fiction, true-life saga for what it's worth and leave her and her non-existant editor alone.
Why I like this book and why you should too: If any of you who survived the 80's, remember the spherical object game, Simon, then you should look at this book. It reflects a passage in which much paranormal activity occured throughout the house, prompting Elaine-the stoic mother to roam out the hallways and rooms to find the noises. When she scants past an empty living room, feeling tired, ready to head back to her bed at 4am, she hears the Simon game give that dreaded "Bahh ahh ahh" sound when you answered incorrectly. That game doesn't make that sound unless it's been played. And it wouldn't make that sound even if it had been left on all night. Freaky, everyday stuff that can't be overlooked. This book is legit. Thankfully, she found out some great history of the house and the property which always makes the haunting more real and more scary. It's the history we want to forget that brings the horror right to our face and Elaine made it happen.
Also, Her youngest daughter likes to play outside while mom makes dinner. Elaine can see her daughter outside through the kitchen window. It occured to her one day, the visions she sees outside aren't her daughter at all, in fact, her youngest isn't outside that day at all...and it's not a neighbor girl sitting on the back porch by the garage...
See what I mean? Compelling. You will like this one, it's honest, and that's hard to find no matter what year these ratings are read.

I thought this book was very well written. Rather than reading, it felt as though you were sitting in the living room with the author sipping coffee while listening to her story. She explains why it is not so easy to just leave a "haunted house". I couldn't wait for the end of the day so I could settle in and continue to read about their experiences. I was sad to finish the book and passed it on for others to enjoy. Most believable supernatural story I've read in a long time.
