MUCH better than other review claims March 27, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
While there are specific philosophical problems with Vardy's discussion (e.g., he is prone to committing the straw man fallacy with views that don't correspond with his own), the book IS a good overview of the issue.
The other reviewer's comments are, quite frankly, baldly politically motivated and uninformed. Regarding the former, given that 9/11 and Israel are spoken about to illustrate relativism, the author claims that Vardy is anti US and Israel. S/he obviously misses Vardy's larger point and is merely being jingoistic. Regarding the latter point, Vardy ISN'T anti-catholic, he IS catholic. The University of London where he teaches is a Jesuit University for peets sake!
The beauty of the internet is its radically democratic nature, but this entails that plenty of commentary--like the previous reviewer's comments--will be small-minded and/or outright false....
Not a Very Good Thinker October 22, 2005 1 out of 10 found this review helpful
Yes it may be a good introduction to some thought; yes it gives good references to some other material to consider; but it is consistently disappointing and laughable in anti-american, anti-israel, and anti-catholic bias. Appears to be written by authors who know some philosophy and religion but are clueless in history and politics (except where modern university pc may be unthinkingly substituted)
