This Book will boost your Faith in God September 4, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I gave this 5 stars because this book gave my faith a boost. I would rate it a star less for the fact that as an "autobiography", it really should've included more personal boyhood accounts of his miraculousness, or other personal incidents which are scattered throughout his other books. E.g., it would've been nice to include the incident with the NYC robbers who froze up after an attempted robbery on him (evidently by Yogananda's powerful high-vibrational gaze). This story is in his book "Inner Peace". Other wonderful stories are told in other books such as "The Divine Romance". If he had compiled all of them into this book, yes, making it a lot longer, this "autobiography" would in my opinion be perfect. I suppose he, being modest and humble, at the time thought the stories of the Tiger Swami or other yogis were more powerful and thus wrote of them in this book. I notice in reading his other writings and lectures, that Yogananda avoids talking about himself when he explains something, but I know that using himself as an example would make it all more believable.
Nevertheless, when I feel disconnected from God, I frequently grab this book and open any page. Therein I get my boost of Reality, which is God, all else is delusion. Especially informative is his guru Sri Yukestwar's return to tell him of what is going on beyond this dimension -- LOTS! If only you can imagine it! Finally the dead returns to tell us! Not only do we have earthly bodies to shed in reincarnation, but astral and causal, leaving the spark of the soul to remain, to be merged with God in the final hr of our eternal existence, or whatever you call it. So all of us reading this right now, we have a LOOOOOONG way to go! (But of course time means nothing, it is all NOW.) What this means, according to Yogananda's guru, is that after we are finished with earthly reincarnation, we still have to go through the cycles of reincarnation of the astral realm, learn to become non-attached to the astral planet, shed the astral body. Then we go to the causal realm, and get recycled there until we can let that go before entering the ocean of God-bliss forever. Forever of course till God decides to do something else with His essence!
There are so many eye-opening things in this book to ponder on...
I still thrill to each chapter! August 18, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Reading this book at the age of forty-two was one of the most exhilarating experiences of my life. From the beginning chapter, I felt like I had finally come home. This was the life I had always wished was possible but never dreamed it could be!
I just now finished listening to Chapter 23 as I was driving to a restaurant. I've listened to the audiobook version, read by Ben Kingsley, a few times now and it never fails to thrill me. Everything in this book resonates in harmony with who I am and who I wish to be. I was already teaching classes on spirituality by the time I encountered this inspiring book and was amazed at how much deeper it took me in my knowledge and practice.
Yogananda teaches that direct contact with God is possible through the application of scientific yoga principles. After practicing his techniques, which have been handed down for thousands of years by Indian sages, I have reached ever higher levels of peace, happiness and alignment with what Yogananda's beloved guru, Swami Sri Yukteswar, calls "that supreme intelligence which governs everything."
May this magnificent book enrich your spiritual life as it has mine!
Miracles Abounding August 3, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I rememeber this book in 1970 when I worked in a bookstore in Greenwich Village. It was popular then and it seems to be my karma to obtain a cloth version upon recommendation from a new friend in a local ashram. Besides have a great impact on my own spiritual life as it attempts to reconcile Christianity with Hinduism, it is startling to read the poetic and crafted wording used by the author to describe the world from his own spiritual state of mind. There are many miracoulous events that occur and it is fifficult to be cynical when they are described in such a simple and beautiful way with self effacement. The events have a profound effect upon the reader and the scientific part of the mind, generating cause and effect, is overcome. It is incredibly footnoted and as Herman Melville describes the history of whaling in Moby Dick, this yogi provides ample background of the spiritual and scientific paradigm is his life and the world around the time of the First World War. I recommend exposing your mind to the peaceful and poetic journey that awaits the reader describing this remarkable life.
Another Uplifting and Inspiring Work from SRF June 25, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Several years ago, I was introduced to Yogananda and Self Realization Fellowship by my wife, who had been a member for a number of years prior. I'd read Yogananda's book from cover to cover several times - I have it on my PDA to read before bed or when waiting in line, etc. These CD's take his message to the next level. Expertly narrated by Ben Kingsley, they are the perfect companion while driving, working on the computer, walking, or whenever one needs an uplifting and thought-provoking interlude to a hectic life.
For those that aren't familiar with Yogananda and SRF, and for those who are, I would highly recommend this set. 5 stars!
