Simply JOY! July 20, 2006 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Having read other books on the Gita, I have often been left more perplexed than clear. Truly the Gita stands among the greatest Scriptures written, yet much of it remained beyond my direct understanding.
Swami Kriyananda has delivered the most joyful and insightful experience within the pages of the Essense of the Bagavad Gita. My intuitive understanding has been expanded... my heart opened... and I have finally received all from the wisdom of the Gita so well articulated in this great work. I bow humbly to you Swami Kriyanada.
The Essence of the Bhagavad Gita: Explained by Paramahansa Yogananda July 17, 2006 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
I was first introduced to the Gita by a sect in LA called Vedanta. But before that we went to Paramhansa Yogananda's center on Sunset Blvd. Though He had died before we were able to meet him, he knew the truth as well, however they did not provide instruction on the Gita at that time. This was still a good read. Vedanta taught me to also understand the Vedas and the Upanashads (I don't remember the spelling as that occured over 30 years ago.) But I have never forgotten the truth of their teachings
Finally - an "American" Gita July 17, 2006 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
The Gita contains the distilled essence of religious practice. Too bad that all of the interpretations, so far, have been hemmed-in by the culture of India. Or, they've been so poetically terse or scholarly dry as to obscure their practical application.
I think of this book as an "American Gita" because it's just incredibly readable, continually interesting, and wonderfully plainspoken. It never talks down or becomes hazy or heavy, but speaks to the reader as a friend. I'm familiar with Yogananda, how he said of these Gita interpretations that millions would "find God through this book -- not thousands. Millions! I know, I have seen it!" This book has that kind of power. Reading it, one feels in touch with a sacred dispensation. It is a blessing to hold it in one's hands. Doubly amazing, then, that it is so open-hearted, joyous, and humanly compassionate. This is religion freed from old forms of doctrinal rigidity and sectarian hate; it's religion that speaks to the individual seeker directly - thatt calls to the human heart to form a direct, personal relationship with God. Best of all, it reveals the practical steps to that inner communion. I say thank heaven for Kriyananda and his Guru, Paramhansa Yogananda. They have left us a gift of great value.
Incredible, brilliantly done July 15, 2006 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
OK, I've read other spiritual works, & even other commentaries on the Gita. This one tops them all. Kriyananda knows what he's talking about; when he explains Yogananda's commentaries, you get it. Spirituality comes alive! I rate this up there with Autobiography of a Yogi.
Life transforming July 14, 2006 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
While there are many translations and commentaries on India's popular scripture, the Bhagavad Gita, The Essence of the B.G. by P. Yogananda (as written by Swami Kriyananda) makes the practical and philosophical essence of yoga accessible, inspired, and profound. This is the inner teaching of the Gita and truly of all religion: the direct, personal contact of God through daily prayer and meditation, and specifically illuminating the pyscho-physiological "anatomy" of enlightenment which is yoga's unique contribution to human kind. Not for diletantes or mere scholars, this is for sincere seekers and especially meditators or potential meditators! Yogananda proclaimed, at the conclusion of dictating his commentary of the Gita, that this book would inspire and touch untold numbers of people in the times and centuries to come. Don't miss it!
