4 out of 5 stars The whole truth and nothing but the truth?   September 11, 2005

Is there any book that is the whole truth and nothing but the truth?

All books are to be read with an open mind.

1 out of 5 stars A very narrow interpretation of Truth.....   June 27, 2005

When I read this interpretation of the Bhagavad-Gita by A.C.Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, I was very disappointed. His narrow interpretation was not scholarly and was lacking in deep insight about Hinduism. His claim that Krishna is the supreme Godhead of this cosmos amounts to a pure lack of spiritual inner realization by the swami. People of other faiths who read this book will be filled with a lack of understanding of the REAL essence of Hinduism. This interpretation also revels that the swami had yet to even reach the spiritual state of "Jivan Mukhti".

If one wants to understand the deeper essence of the Bhagavad-Gita, he/she should read "The Bhagavad Gita: Royal Science of God-Realization: God Talks with Arjuna: The Immortal Dialogue Between Soul and Spirit (2 volumes)" by Paramahansa Yogananda. When one compares these two interpretations, a scholarly mind would be able to discern the major differences between these two works.

Nevertheless, Swami Prabhupada was a very sincere soul, lacking in divine wisdom. Before his death, he cried to God "Where have I gone wrong!" His disciples were not spiritually advanced yet because of the Swami's sectarian view of Hinduism. I would strongly recommend that those who wish to understand the real meaning of the Bhagavad-Gita, "STAY AWAY FROM THIS BOOK!!!"

3 out of 5 stars Strong Hare Krshna slant   June 13, 2005

Many English translations of the Bhagavad-Gita realize that most of its readers are not Indian Hindus and therefore present it in such a way that a Westerner can easily read it and interpret it however he wishes. This is NOT one of those translations.

The late A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada was the man who brought Hare Krshna (a cultic sect of Hinduism) to the United States in the '50s and '60s. Today you can find his followers trying to sell you Hare Krshna books in the Los Angeles airport.

In his translation of the Gita he is not attemtping to present Hinduism or the ancient Vedas or modern new age spirituality. He is unapologetically promoting Hare Krshna. He doesn't present it as one possible truth but rather as the ultimate truth.

I guess the translation itself is alright, but it's the commentary I can do without. Swami's near-constant commentary is in-your-face and cynical of all things that are non-Hare Krshna.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest commentary on Gita   May 4, 2005

I read so many commentaries on Gita. But this is the best!

This teaches the actual spirit of Gita, without compromising on principles. There are so many commentaries which mislead the readers. Like people with some basic knowledge of Sanskrit publish Gita Commentary, which is very bad. Since one can't understand Gita without being a devotee, similar to -one can't understand mathematics from a person who never liked mathematics. A devotee can understand Krishna better and his teachings than the people who understand some parts of Gita and proclaim to be gurus. Beware of those cheaters! I have seen some professors commenting on Gita. Krishna could have spoken Gita to Sanskrit scholars. He didn't do so, because he is interested in devotion not money, Phd, or some external designations.

The author doesn't loose the spirit of Gita anywhere.
You will have no doubts about the principles and applications of Gita after reading this.

Ultimate book for understanding soul, nature, karma and God!

4 out of 5 stars Important Translation By a Great Devotee   March 21, 2005
10 out of 14 found this review helpful

While this translation certainly delivers a specific and direct point of view, one not to the liking of many, it is still a very important translation. The reason for this is clear; it was written by a real Devotee, not some scholar, historian, or psuedo yogi. The terse and one sided views are those of a clearly fundamentalist Devotee, but still a Devotee. It can be read with that in mind, or not. Either way, this translation is powerful and full of love for Krishna. That is important. Many translations are not coming from the devotional perspective. This one is. The real proof of its power comes from my own experience. The first time I read this incredible book, I read it cover to cover - all of it, in less than 3.5 hours. Most books don't pull me in to that extent. This one did. As time goes by and more knowledge on the Gita is absorbed, this translation can take on a variety of colors, some of them dark and limiting. The fundamental perspective is just that; the fundamentals. It is not the whole picture, but it is the primary colors. Once read, this translation will always draw the reader back. Whether considered simplistic or not, flawed or not, it is an important work.
Read it. Study it. Then read the others.
