5 out of 5 stars It has changed my life!   May 9, 2006

Not everyone understands this edition of Bhagavad-Gita by Srila Prabhupada, the founder of the Hare Krishna Movement, that proclaims itself "As it is".
I just can say that, at the beginning, I was like "What the heck...?"
But by the end of the book, I had no arguments to counteract...
Whether you are Christian, Muslim, Jewish or whatever...you'll find in this book pieces of scientifical (more than religious or sectarian))information you won't find anywhere in the Bible, Koran, Torah or any other spiritual literature in the world.
Be prepared to find the pleasure you've always been hankering for...otherwise, don't read it!
I's definitely changed my life.

5 out of 5 stars The original word of God   May 7, 2006

Amazing details. No interpretation, true to its title "As it is".

Take this test: If, after reading the word of God, you come to the same conclusion that Arjuna came up with after hearing the Lord's word directly in first person, you know your conclusion is right and the Bhagavad-Gita you read didn't dilute or change the original message.

You wouldn't get the same message in Bhagavad-Gita by any other author other than His Divine Grace A.C.Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada.

5 out of 5 stars The Topmost Bhagavad Gita, The Bhagavad Gita As It Is   March 31, 2006

( a.k.a. Glenn Vernon Powell )

I started to read various editions of the Bhagavad Gita as a teenager in the 60s and 70s, over 30 years ago, and after reading several, and becoming confused by all the word jugglery of speculative "scholars", I was extremely fortunate to be introduced to this Bhagavad Gita As It Is, by His Divine Grace AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada.

Srila Prabhupada, who lived the Bhagavad Gita the entire eighty two years of his life, maintains the integrity of the Bhagavad Gita, because he is actually a pure devotee, coming in the Vaisnava disciplic sucession, from Sri Krsna Himself, the speaker of the Gita.

http://bhagavadgitaasitis.com/4/3/en

To be a recipient and practioner in this disciplic sucession is essential,to be able to render the Bhagavad Gita, otherwise like so many bhogi yogis, over 600 books called the Bhagavad Gita are on the market, but they are not the Bhagavad Gita, because they deviate from the true essence of Krishna's conclusion, which is found at the end of the Gita. :

Generally, what the bhogi yogis do, is they manufacture some impersonal interpertation, in which they say it is not to God, Krishna, whom we must surrender to, but to the Unmanifest Brahman , beyond Krishna. These are the rantings of a madman, because Krishna Himself says that He is the source of the brahmajyoti, or unmanifest Brahman. Energy comes from the personal , energetic source Sri Krishna, not that Krishna is coming from something else.

He IS the source of everything, as He further confirms :

Bhagavad Gita As It Is, is most widely used by professors teaching courses in Indology and Hindusim in all the major universities of the world :

George Harrison of the Beatles introduced me to this version of the Bhagavad Gita, through his music. When his album "Living in the Material World" was released, there was a poster of Lord Krishna and Arjuna from the cover painting of this Bhagavad Gita As It Is, done by one of Prabhupada's disciples. I believe Mother Syamarani did it. Although most people associate the Beatles with the Maharishi, George later actually aspired to become the disciple of the founder of the Hare Krishna Movement and author, Srila Prabhupada, but Prabhupada said that "George is more than my disciple", and told him he didn't have to shave his head or move into the Hare Krishna temple, but could do a greater service living outside, composing songs about Krishna for the public.

So I have George Harrison to thank eternally for introducing me to the author Srila Prabhupada of this most authorized version of Bhagavad Gita As It Is. Buy an extra one for a friend, because someone will borrow yours from you, and probably not want to give it back ! Better yet, buy a whole case, and give them as gifts !

I have a free study course as a companion to the Bhagavad Gita As It Is at : www.vedalearn.com For more info, please contact : gaura_acbsp@yahoo.com

1 out of 5 stars Biased and closed minded translation   October 22, 2005
5 out of 21 found this review helpful

I always believed spirituality to be and kind of open minded thing. I look at most the different religions as containing paths to the ultimate truth and thus i have alot of respect for them.

In this translation of the Bhagavad-Gita the author reveals in my opinion how seperate he is from God and how unholy he is. He makes attacks on other sects of Hinduism and on other religions. He insists that there is only one way and one path. I had read a little about this before buying the book, but thought that i could ignore it. Well it's very very hard to ignore it and it starts to effect your karma when you're reading it because it is constantly upsetting you and having you do things like write reviews to try to get other people not to read it.

I think the author did a fairly decent job with translations and his biases are for the most part left out of those, but they are probably in them a little too, this is my first time reading this holy book. It is also interesting that even though he makes attacks on others views on what the texts are about, this allows you to see the texts from different angles, although it's not the best way to do it.

Ultimately i can't recommend this book, simply for what i feel is the extreme biased and negative energy flowing from the author. I will look for another translation of this holy book, because i know there is alot to be gained from it.

5 out of 5 stars An Inspired Translation   September 14, 2005

I have read several translations; this edition is Bhakti (Krsna devotional) inspired. Therefore, I recommend this edition for its pure Devotional and Inspirational aspects. This is my preferred translation.
Also, consider the Gita's with the commentaries of Shri Shankara and/or Shri Ramanuja for a more philosophical prospective.
