A translation by one authorized to present it.December 1, 1998 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
The fact that this book has transformed so many lives is testament to its superiority over the editions found in so many new-age book shops. The author has not only translated the Sanskrit for us, but has included lucid purports to educate us in all of the basic principles of Vedic knowledge. Other editions may contain accurate transliterations, but this one is special because the author lived by the Gita's instructions and was therefore able to present it in such a way as to affect a change in its sincere reader. No other edition has had such a powerful influence on persons accross the world. I could not say enough about it. If you have any desire to discover the answers to all of your existential questions, read it!
A scientific presentation by Krsna to Arjuna about bhaktiNovember 18, 1998 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
The Bhagavad-gita As It Is has revolutionized the lives of many millions of people around the world and is printed in over 60 different languages. This book talks about the Supreme Lord Krsna (isvara), time (kala), nature (prakrti), activities (karma), and us (jiva). An amazing presentation- a model of life and the universe completely different from the athiestic version taught in modern day schools. And just see by the results- how many people gave up their lives and modern education to live the teachings found in this book! I was so amazed I quit my job and spent 2 years rendering the entire book into multimedia CDROM format. Whatever Srila Prabhupada writes has the magical touch of bhakti. No silly syntax or semantical errors can hide the radiant bhakti flowing out from his books! Please save yourself from the miseries of material existence and read the Gita AS IT IS.
This book saved my life.November 12, 1998 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
The Bhagavad Gita as it is has given me the understanding to try to make my life usefull for me and others. Inprired by Srila Prabhupada the author and also my spiritual master I have entered into the tradition of Vaisnava monks. He also inspired me to take the message of the Gita all over south america and today we have Gita schools and Ashrams in most cities of the continent as well as in other parts of the world.
Philosphically consistent; a masterpiece of transcendenceOctober 26, 1998 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Swami Prabhupad's translations and purports do perfect justice to this original "Song of God" (Bhagavad = God, Gita = Song)composed by Sree Krishna 5,000 years ago. Whereas most translators have used the original verses composed by Krishna as a launching pad for their own philosophical theories, the Swami has given us an "egoless" translation which delivers the very essence of Sree Krishna's Divine Song. This book is a must for all theists and students of transcendence.
As It Is, Not as others would like it to be.October 24, 1998 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
After reading a half dozen other versions of the Gita, it was refreshing to read this one, as it is the only one that touches upon the real subject matter of the Gita, i.e. the personalist's view of God. All others teach an impersonalist's view. Like Thoreau, I too have bathed my intellect in this stupendous work of love and devotion from it's author, Srila Prabhupada. Truly, it is a version that will last for 10,000 years.
