5 out of 5 stars Deception   October 9, 2009

Eighteen months ago, Lukas Barone walked out of Katherine McAuley's life without a word. He just disappeared. Kate never got over Luke, but she managed to move on with her life - until he shows up again telling her he needs her. Less than a day later, after Luke tells Kate about his undercover profession and that some very powerful people are after him, they're on the run. Kate has no choice but to trust the man who broke her heart; her life depends on it.

Deception is exciting from first page to last. I love how it starts and how it ends. In between, there's a lot of suspense and tender emotion. Kate had a very rough time when Luke disappeared. He has to earn her trust back, which isn't too hard since it's staring them in the face and threatening their lives. The angst between Kate and Luke is real and so is the danger in Deception.

5 out of 5 stars romance with a little suspence   July 12, 2009

Not my normal read, but I figured it was a freebie at the time, I couldn't put it down. I wanted to see what happened to Luke after he walked out of kate's life 18 months ago. He showed up on her door one night and half dead and she nursed him back to health, what do you do when someone is after you and trying to kill you? You run, and that is what they did. Luke had to figure out why? And wold they get back together when it was all over?

Katherine McAuley couldn't believe her eyes when she looked out of the peephole and saw Luke Barone standing in her doorway. One day eighteen months ago, he had just vanished from her life. Now he was asking for her help, and when Kate opened the door to tell him to go away, he fell through unconscious. She had just started to get her life back together, and now Luke was back, but she didn't know if she could survive the heartbreak of his absence when he left her again. Kate knew she should get him out of her house as soon as humanly possible to save her already tortured soul.

Luke Barone was an IATT operative, but even he didn't know what was going on, and needed a place to lay low to find out. He had been attacked when he returned home, and based on his injuries, he knew without a doubt he wasn't supposed to survive. He had missed his Katie the entire time he had been gone, and knew he wasn't fit to be around her, but couldn't think of anywhere else to go. Luke desperately needed to reconnect with the woman that had become the center of his being. He was shocked though to see the changes in Kate. She obviously had been through some type of trauma. Her changes weren't just physical because he could see the haunted and pained look in her eyes. The biggest change he noticed was that she wasn't painting anymore. He wondered why something that was such a large part of her was now missing. Before he could think about it for long, he heard an intruder. Relying on his gut instinct telling him to get out, he grabbed Kate, but was forced to kill the intruder that he had always known as a peer and coworker.

As severely injured as he was, Luke now knew they were against a formidable foe, and he vowed to protect Kate even if the price was his life. He didn't want to ever let her down like he had again. As they went on the run, and the lines between friend and foe blurred, Luke only hoped he could get them out of this mess in tact.

What a great suspenseful read! Well-developed characters with enough chemistry and passion between them to scorch. Kate and Luke are two lonely people struggling with torment too great for each of them to carry alone. It will take each other to heal the wounds.

4 out of 5 stars Great Summer Read From Start To Finish   August 7, 2009

I love this novel and found it to be a great read! It draws you in from the very start and keeps you interested through the end of the novel. The characters are well developed and likable. Plus the dialogue between characters is good too. The mix of mystery & romantic-suspense is perfect. The novels ending had some cheesiness to it, which is why I gave this novel a 4 out of 5 rating.... But the slightly cheesy ending isn't enough for me not to recommend this novel to others though.

This is the first novel I've read by Sharon Cullen & I look forward to reading more of her novels in the future.

4 out of 5 stars Romance/Suspense - not bad   June 18, 2009

I downloaded this book on my Kindle because it was free. It's not my usual genre, but it was actually a decent read. Romance with suspense and a pretty decent plot. The uncovering of the "villians" motivation/crimes should have been developed a bit more. I think 3.75 stars would probably be a better rating. I liked it enough that I would check out the author's next books when I'm in the mood for a similar type book. I'll bet she gets better with time and experience.
