Product Description
The astonishing, uplifting story of a real-life Indiana Jones and his humanitarian campaign to use education to combat terrorism in the Talibans backyard

Anyone who despairs of the individuals power to change lives has to read the story of Greg Mortenson, a homeless mountaineer who, following a 1993 climb of Pakistans treacherous K2, was inspired by a chance encounter with impoverished mountain villagers and promised to build them a school. Over the next decade he built fifty-five schoolsespecially for girlsthat offer a balanced education in one of the most isolated and dangerous regions on earth. As it chronicles Mortensons quest, which has brought him into conflict with both enraged Islamists and uncomprehending Americans, Three Cups of Tea combines adventure with a celebration of the humanitarian spirit.

5 out of 5 stars Three Cups of Tea   September 4, 2008

This is an outstanding story, well told. I think it should be required reading at the high school level. I also think every member of Congress should read it. It is not only heart warming, but really significant that one person can accomplish so much and to know that there are so many muslims that share or value of education for both boys and girls. It was also very educational about what is going on in that part of the world.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book and Education   September 3, 2008

This book was absolutely amazing. I don't have much to write as others have already done great reviews. I want to say that part of the book's intent is to convey that education for remote areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan is essential in reducing/preventing extremist sects. However, I think is it also essential for the rest of the world to read this book as education on the importance of these values and as a great look into an insider's view of the culture in Pakistan and Afghanistan. I was blown away by this book and if you can read it, you should!

5 out of 5 stars One can make a difference   September 3, 2008

This is an incredible story of how one man was inspired through the events surrounding a mountaineering failure to attempt and achieve what was otherwise thought impossible. Greg Mortenson has not only built and financed a school in one of the poorest and most remote parts of Pakistan, he has done it with grace and respect that is lacking from so many humanitarians in the world. Furthermore he has replicated this feat dozens of times.

This book is a must read for human beings all over the world. It is highly instructional especially for those in positions of power to help us make intelligent decisions.

My only very minor criticism is that the writing was a bit dense in parts with a few of the details and stories leaving me thinking "that didn't add to the central story, was it really necessary?"

Nevertheless it is otherwise an inspiration to what one person with a clear goal and determination, a bit of luck, and love in his heart can do for world peace.

If there is any justice, Mortenson should get the Nobel Peace Prize.

Insightful and inspiring! I have spent many months living and working in different parts of the Middle East and I will go back next time with a different view - for the better. Greg Mortensen should be highly commended for his compassion, dedication and selflessness; and so should his wife, Tara. I have never been so inspired to want to help others that are much, much less fortunate than I am.
