The Ultimate Book on Supreme Knowledge..!!! October 28, 2008 I read books from serveral subject-lines, from Psychology, Philosophy, Religion, Self Development, Leadership to all-time best sellers in Amazon. This book is a must-read and tops among the best 3 books in my library.
I'v also read several books on Hindusims written by the so-called great Philosphers, some big UK University professors and also by big-time publishers. But, somehow I was not satisfied as it was kind of academic, abstract, vauge, misleading, incomplete and incorrect. I was thinking myself why there isn't a great & authentic book on Hindusim despite some big Universities in India. How come they ignored this great responsibility.
Then, I bought this book and found out that this is the ultimate book. So, I decided to post my review in Amazon for the benefit of all people. This book has all the knowledge you ever need in your life as it covers all aspects of Hinduism from true history / philosophy to MISLEADING & DEMEANING teachings / writings / books.
I spent so many years reading various books and this book is one of the top 3 unparalleled books in my library. Don't think that is another good book becasue you can't compare this book with other mundane books (even though it may be good). This book is something supreme in knowledge.
Finally, I'm greateful for the author who had taken this great work for the good of the humanity. To me, he's bigger than the Universities that I talked about.
Hmmm...what do I think of this book?...Okay...Let me mention that... October 26, 2008 this is a fairly well written book. It has some material that I wish that non-Indians and non-Hindus could be informed about, especially when it comes to the events and the earlier people with in Indian history and the cultural and religious contributions that were developed and provided by the Indians. Although the encyclopedia helps me gain some knowledge of my dense and complex Indian heritage that I never had time to learn about, there are still a few cons about this book. The author should not stereotype the entire West for being ant-Hindu or anti-Indian. He seems to forget that Hinduism, since ancient times, has been a religion of acceptance, tolerance and universalism; and NOT about criticizing and looking down upon other cultures, religions and their contributions to society. I believe that the author comes from a Hindu sect that is more rigid. But the sect, which I come from, is less stricter than the one he probably comes from. In the book, unfortunately, he seems to have written some religious material in his sect's perspective instead of focusing on Hinduism as whole. Guess I'll have to look else where next time if I want universally inspired information. Every culture and religion is beautiful. Appreciation is the key!
An Angry Book of Questionable Worth October 10, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased this book based on the strong recommendation of an acquaintance on goodreads, but now that I have had a chance to look at it I am returning it to amazon for a refund. I was really looking forward to a comprehensive, authoritative book on "The True History and the Religion of India," but that's not even remotely what this book is about.
A pair of Western scholars (Michael Witzel and Steve Farmer, "Horesplay in Harappa," Frontline Magazine, 10/13/00) have observed: "In the past few decades, a new kind of history has been propagated by a vocal group of Indian writers, few of them trained historians, who lavishly praise and support each other's works. Their aim is to rewrite Indian history from a nationalistic and religious point of view. Their writings have special appeal to a new middle class confused by modern threats to traditional values. With alarming frequency their movement is backed by powerful political forces, lending it a mask of respectability that it does not deserve." I believe this is precisely one such book, and will be happy to have it out of my house.
I recommend that readers new to the subject consult the works of Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami instead of this one -- Dancing With Siva: Hinduism's Contemporary Catechism is an excellent place to begin, and in addition to being offered for sale here on amazon and elsewhere, all Subramuniyaswami-ji's writings can be read for free in their entirety on the Himalayan Academy website. As a general rule of thumb, I maintain that a Guru who does not show respect for any non-Indian cultures or religions does not represent the true Sanatan Dharma.
The Most Important Literature on Vedic Philosophy / Truth! September 4, 2008 Unparalleled! This is the most highly valuable book you would ever find on Vedic knowledge / truth. Best of all, we have all aspects of Vedic Philosophy, its history and clarification on misleading writings in one handy volume. I feel lucky that I have gotton this book of Vedic knowledge which was not accessible for thousands of years!
Best book on Authentic Hinduism September 1, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is the most valuable book I've ever read in my life. I'm a voracious reader and read a lot of books from variety of subjects. If you want to have only one book on Hinduism, then this is the must-have book. The knowledge and wisdom that you are going to get out of this book is greater than life. This universal book personifies truth, wisdom and greatness and provides the essense of the Vedas, the Upnishads, the Gita, the Bhagwatam, the Puranas. It also clarifies the misinterpretations (non-truthful/misleading writings) of Hindusim and this is a neccessity. FYI, I respect all relegions. I cherish this book as a great treasure.
