Product Description Planets in Play is the first foundational book that lets the reader reimagine his or her inner life through the self-exploratory language of astrology. Author Laurence Hillman-a widely respected astrologer with a loyal following and a formidable online presence-reconnects the planets with the character traits given them by the ancients.
Whether one accepts astrology as being "real," its language and concepts can go a long way toward helping us see the archetypes that play on our lives. In observing the strengths, weaknesses, and character traits of each planet and zodiac sign, readers will receive a toolbox filled with instruments with which to newly understand their lives.
The reader will then be able to make more conscious choices about how he or she is living out these different aspects. To that end, Hillman provides specific tactics and highly practical ideas of how to expressly nourish or minimize these tendencies through choice of behavior, lifestyle, and personal surroundings. Case examples, stories, and anecdotes run throughout the book to demonstrate and ease this process.
In its appendices, Planets in Play provides a guide in how to get a quality astrological reading, with an emphasis on one's dominant archetypes. In addition, Hillman offers a basic grounding in astrology for those readers, therapists, or counselors who wish to learn how the ancient art works at a psychological level without necessarily committing themselves to its study.

Enlightened and Modern Guidance from a Master July 25, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was very fortunate to have been introduced to Laurence Hillman several years ago by a good friend, and have been a devoted client ever since. Laurence has become a valued teacher and advisor, and although I've long admired his intelligence, intuitiveness and eloquent yet accessible communication style, I have not read his previous work and was unsure what to expect from this book.
Simply put, this is not only the ONLY book about astrology that has ever resonated with me, but it's the only book about astrology that I've ever been able to finish! I've struggled for years to find a book that would finally implant the basic tenets of astrology into my brain in a way that not only made sense, but laid the groundwork for future insights and personal growth. This is the book.
Laurence uses his characteristic eloquence and intelligence to draw analogy between the astrological elements (planets, signs, houses, aspects) and the theatre (actors, costumes, sets, relationships). Using this analogy, Laurence transforms a birth chart into a stage upon which the reader is able to view the drama of her life unfold. Further, Laurence's wise and modern observations about human nature and behavior in the astrological context allow the reader to develop a deep understanding of the forces that influence our daily existences and relationships, and to make enlightened choices about our futures.
Opening a window into your life May 6, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I had dabbled in astrology but didn't really understand it till I read this book. A great resource to use again and again. I pathway to self acceptance and understanding. I highly recommend it.
if you only read one book about astrology November 30, 2007 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I loved this book and read the whole thing in a day and a half. It is beautifully and thoughtfully written, soulful, accessible and with a great breadth of reference that reflects his thirty plus years as an astrologer. It also contains practical suggestions for bringing the archetype of each planet to the fore in your life. I was so taken with the book that I contacted the author via his website for a reading and I have just ordered his other book on amazon. It is written in everyday language but has a great deal of depth and weight, I highly recommend it.
Planets in Play November 18, 2007 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
Imagine a book filled with wisdom from Shakespeare to Abe Lincoln to Dr. Seuss, one that draws upon the teachings of Budhism, Hinduism, Christianity and Judaism, and incorporates the observations of philosophers and professors as well as the insights of comics. Then imagine being shown how these ideas and energies apply to your own life. PLANETS IN PLAY is a practical guide to understanding how and why we all see through differing lenses. Better still, it offers ways of focusing or "owning" the unique combination of drives we were given at birth while providing alternatives to old habits and patterns, gaining us entry into the invisible, though powerfully felt, world of archetypes.
Even for those who know nothing of astrology, PLANETS IN PLAY makes it easy to recognize certain traits and characteristics that are lived out by each of us. In that sense, it's a mirror reflecting our innate being.
I recommend Laurence Hillman's book for its wonderful descriptions, its intelligence, humor and lively pace.
Astrology made easy and fun October 28, 2007 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
Laurence Hillman has created an exquisite book, full of word pictures that stimulate the imagination. Planets in Play is the first book to make astrology easy to see intuitively in addition to making it easy to understand. I like thinking of myself as a link in the cosmic story and seeing my life illuminated through the archetypes suggested by the planets in their houses and signs. This is a good read for anyone on the path of self understanding and true self discovery. Planets in Play will be a wonderful gift book for friends who might have scrupulously avoided astrology. Nothing to fear, no dire predictions, just a whole lot of ideas that appeal to anyone seeking to grow in consciousness.
