The format is a good help with first an introduction with information on each of the sources and then the texts from them. The author seems to concentrate mostly on the ascetic writings from these sources. It might be helpful along with this book to read Sebastian Brock's The Syriac Fathers on Prayer and the Spiritual Life. For Isaac of Syria Hylarion Alfeyev's The Spiritual World of Isaac the Syrian would help, and for Ephrem of Syria Brock's The Luminous Eye: The Spiritual World Vision of Saint Ephrem the Syrian. All are published by Cistercian Publications.
