Spooky Madison has a Lot of Stories to TellSeptember 12, 2008 Reviewer: Katie Kintner, founder, Fox Valley Spirit Hunters, Oshkosh WI http://foxvalleyspirithunters.2fear.com
Having grown up in south central Wisconsin and lived in Madison over 25 years, I thought I knew my adopted home town pretty well. But reading through Sherry Straub's new book about Madison area hauntings has put a whole new perspective on the beautiful "City on an Isthmus".
Madison is probably better known as the home of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the main campus of the larger UW system. It is also the state capital, boasting a beautiful capitol building located at the heart of the city, overlooking Lakes Mendota and Monona. The sun shines brightly on weekend Farmer's markets, vast summer art festivals and football Saturdays when State Street is aglow in red-clad Badger boosters.
But what about the darker side of this town, the haunted past of Madison? When I lived in Madison, I had some strange experiences of my own but never really heard much about other possible oddities. Is it that Madison wants to keep its dark secrets hidden close to the vest?
Perhaps, but Sherry Straub helps bring many of those stories to light. Her book is a wonderful tourist's guide to haunted Madison and its neighboring towns. From the strange footsteps of "Ollie", the resident ghost at the Ohio Tavern, to the voices heard at Elsing's 2nd Hand Shop in Stoughton, this is a delightful handbook to take the ghost-seeking tourist from stop to stop. Ever wonder if any university building is haunted? Do ghosts eat ice cream? Who is buried on Bascom Hill? These questions are all answered in Ghosts of Madison, Wisconsin.
