Spooky Massachusetts, featuring witches, a wizard and ghostsSeptember 14, 2008 The Salem witch trials took place in Massachusetts in the 1600's. S. E. Schlosser features a retelling of these events in story thirteen called "Madness". The person relating the tale is a witch who was alive at the time and present for the trials. The events are presented in a chronological manner and almost appear to have been taken from a personal diary. The story is quite realistic. I enjoyed reading "The White Wizard", which is about a wizard who helped sailors in the Marblehead area when they were at sea. "Time Warp" tells about the events at Lexington and Concord at the beginning of the Revolutionary War. The speaker is taken back in time to relive part of the battle on the Green. "Dark Portrait", deals with the events surrounding the Boston Tea Party.
The first part of the book features ghost stories, among my favorites are "Hide and Seek", "The Treasure and the Cats" and "The Fireside Chair". Two others that I enjoyed are "The Jewelry Box", where a young couple find a safe place to stay for the night and "Thar She Blows", a tale about a whale hunting ship out searching for whales. All the stories capture your interest and can be read several times without losing their freshness.
