Here are some of the remarkable features of Barnes & Noble Classics:
New introductions commissioned from today's top writers and scholars Biographies of the authors Chronologies of contemporary historical, biographical, and cultural events Footnotes and endnotes Selective discussions of imitations, parodies, poems, books, plays, paintings, operas, statuary, and films inspired by the work Comments by other famous authors Study questions to challenge the reader's viewpoints and expectations Bibliographies for further reading Indices & Glossaries, when appropriateAll editions are beautifully designed and are printed to superior specifications; some include illustrations of historical interest. Barnes & Noble Classics pulls together a constellation of influences—biographical, historical, and literary—to enrich each reader's understanding of these enduring works.
Emily Brontë’s only novel, Wuthering Heights remains one of literature’s most disturbing explorations into the dark side of romantic passion. Heathcliff and Cathy believe they’re destined to love each other forever, but when cruelty and snobbery separate them, their untamed emotions literally consume them.

Set amid the wild and stormy Yorkshire moors, Wuthering Heights, an unpolished and devastating epic of childhood playmates who grow into soul mates, is widely regarded as the most original tale of thwarted desire and heartbreak in the English language.
Daphne Merkin is the author of a novel, Enchantment, which won the Edward Lewis Wallant award for best new work of American-Jewish fiction, and an essay collection, Dreaming of Hitler. She has written essays and reviews for publications that include American Scholar, the New York Times, where she is a regular contributor to the Book Review, the Los Angeles Times Book Review, Elle, and Vogue.

5 out of 5 stars Bronte wrote in this book   July 14, 2007

"I don't know if it be a peculiarity in me, but I am seldom otherwise than happy while watching in the chamber of death, should no frenzied or despairing mourner share the duty with me. I see a repose that neither earth nor hell can break, and I feel an assurance of the endless and shadowless hereafter - the Eternity they have entered - where life is boundless in its duration, and love in its sympathy, and joy in its fulness."

One should become, to some extent, acquainted with the Yorkshire Moors, the 18th century and be fully prepared to realize that Emily Bronte was in love with death, then let her take you there. You can come back--she didn't.

5 out of 5 stars hi Heathcliff   January 18, 2009

Being partial to the classics, I enjoyed it and actually got through it quickly. For some reason, I expected this book to be like "Gone With the Wind'...I was so wrong.

Anyway, what is 'Wuthering Heights'? It's a house. With a name like 'wuthering' (which I can't find in the dictionary by the way) I expected this to be a romance novel. Supposedly 'wuthering' is a Yorkshire word that refers to turbulent weather.

I kept hearing this is a 'gothic romance'. It is dark and gothic. It is a love story, but not just that. It's about death and revenge as well.
And with one of the main characters being named 'Heathcliff', I imagined a romantic tall dark and handsome man. Not! Heathcliff is a jerk. A big one. Yes, he is dark and tall. He is supposed to be either a gypsy or spaniard. Nobody knows for sure since he was abandoned and brought to 'Wuthering Heights' as a child. He is raised with Catherine, who by the way is a bit nutty and very selfish, and they become inseperable. The perfect couple!

"Two words comprehend my future-death and hell: existence, after losing her, would be hell. Yet I was a fool to fancy for a moment that she valued Edgar Linton's attachment more than mine. If he loved with all the powers of his puny being, he couldn't love as much in eighty years as I could in a day. And Catherine has a heart as deep as I have..."-Heathcliff

After reading "Jane Eyre" by Charlotte Bronte, I knew I had to read her sister's only novel. Quite an interesting contrast to the love story of "Jane Eyre," but unique and worthwhile nonetheless. A great classic by a 19th century female writer...read it!

5 out of 5 stars The Best of the Bronte Sister's Books!   March 15, 2009

I've always wanted to read this book and finally got around to it in life. I loved it! So gothic, horrid characters, great storytelling and ahead of it's time. I gather in the 1800's this was vulgar, but over time, this became great literature. I enjoyed it enormously. Heathcliff is so horrible. He's just the pit of humanity. I liked this book better than I liked Jane Eyre, which to me was not as good as Austen, but tried to be. This book is superior to Jane Eyre in today's world. It's too bad Emily Bronte did not write more books. This is the ultimate Bronte sisters book. Did I say I loved it?!!!

I teach high school English and needed a book that would last so I was happy to get this one in hard back at a paper back (less) price. Great story too.
